Historic León

León has always been on of the most important cities in Nicaragua. Since Nicaragua's independence from Spain in 1821 León and Granada both struggled for the title as capital city, which is why Managua was chosen to be the only capital.

León retains an architecturally coherent centre with many old colonial houses, streets, monuments, and churches - including the largest cathedral in all of Central America. The fascinating churches of La Merced, El Calvario, San Juan, San Francisco, Sutiaba and La Recolección are within close distance of each other and make for a popular walking tour.

The town has a lively, vibrant feel and many attribute this to it being a university town. In fact the University of León was one of the first universitites in Central America. The town is easily accessible by road - a new highway makes for easy driving between León and Managua, a distance of around 100km.

Around León

León is an obvious starting off point for trips to the beaches of Poneloya and Las Penitas (about 35 minutes by car); the protected reserve on Juan Venado Island and the volcanoes of the Maribios Range. Popular climbs include to the crater lake at the summit of Telica Volcano, the challenging Momotombo, El Hoyo and the black hill of Cerro Negro - which is also famous for volcano boarding.

Real estate values are highest near the Central Park (Parque Central) and old cathedral, reducing relatively uniformly with distance from the centre. The central area is rapidly emerging as a commercial area with investors seeking properties to develop into hotels, bars and restaurants. Further away from the centre the real estate is more residential in nature.
