Why Not Nicaragua?

Saturday, May 26th, 2007

It dawned on me while we were pitching real estate opportunities in this wonderful country to a Coldwell Banker Brokerage in California that the question is no longer “Why Nicaragua?” it’s “Why Not Nicaragua?” After all Costa Rica, the Bahamas, Jamaica and Aruba were once in similar positions and it must have been a stretch for the pioneering investors to image what they could turn into. But they had the vision. They were brave enough. Now they reap the rewards. Having lived here in Nicaragua for four years I can only repeat what I see but it’s hard not to be evangelical about such a country.

An upcoming advert, carries the words: “We turn visitors into locals. After all we love this place too” is honestly and absolutely true but I also know that no one is going to make the decision to invest purely based on their heart and their instincts. In California there was a great deal of appreciative nodding from our property colleagues.

We told them about how Nicaragua’s tourist industry has gone from zilch to a million visitors in recent years – it’s now the countries biggest earner. We told them about foreign investment laws which eliminate restrictions as to how capital enters the country. We also told them that the government fully recognises foreign investors’ rights to own property and use it without limitation.

Fears about crime can be countered with the fact that Nicaragua is second only to Uruguay in Latin America in terms of the lowest reported crime rate. By the same statistics it is actually less dangerous than France, Germany and the United States.

So it’s not, why Nicaragua? It’s why not Nicaragua. And it’s not just me who thinks so. Add us to your bookmarks or your RSS feed and check back. Nicaragua is growing in popularity for investment all the time and we’ll do our best to prove it to you.
